Eligibility Criteria

The minimum academic requirement is a UK 2:1 honors degree in a related subject or an equivalent international qualification. Some examples of equivalent qualifications:

  • India: 1st Class degree (60%+)
  • Canada: mid B+; 3.3+ (4 point scale); 7.3/8+ (9 point scale)
  • USA: GPA 3.25+ (4 point scale)
  • China: 80-85%+; B+
  • Germany: 2.5+ (reverse 5 point scale);
  • Nigeria: 2:1
  • South Africa: 2:1/1st

English language requirement
Applicants must demonstrate English language competency at a level that will enable them to succeed in studies, regardless of their nationality or country of residence.

English Language Tests
University of Edinburgh Business School accepts the following English language qualifications at the grades specified:

  • ELTS (International English Language Testing System): 7.0 (at least 6.0 in each
  • TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) iBT: total 100 (at least 20 in each
  • PTE Academic: 67 (at least 56 in each of the Communicative Skills sections)
  • CAE and CPE: total 185 (at least 169 in each module)
  • Trinity ISE (Integrated Skills in English): ISE III with a Pass in all four components

Assessment of Your Application

Successful applicants are likely to have scored very highly in both academic results (60% weightage) and non-academic qualities (40% weightage).

Points to note

  • The ranking of the applicant’s university is considered to determine whether or not his/her degree is equivalent to a first or upper second-class honours degree in the UK.
  • If applicant’s degree is not of the required standard and applicant does not have highly relevant work or other experience, application is normally rejected.
  • Meeting the degree requirement doesn’t ensure acceptance. A higher standard may be needed for your application to be competitive for admission or funding.
  • Other equivalent qualifications can be requested from the Admissions team.
  • A conditional offer can be made if applicant is waiting for a final degree result or a language test result.

Overseas Students

International students will need to follow immigration requirements in order to study in the UK.

Aside from the minimum entry and language requirements, international applicants may require a Confirmation of Studies (CAS) and a visa in order to study as an undergraduate at the University of Edinburgh.

Visa Requirement
Applicants need Tier 4 visa or short-term student visa to study at the University of Edinburgh.

Tier 4 visa

If you are a non-EU/EEA/Swiss national, and you will come to the UK to study a full-time programme for more than six months, or extending your stay to complete your studies, you will need to apply for a Tier 4 visa. You will also need to apply for a Tier 4 visa if you wish to do a work placement as part of your studies, or look for a part time job.

Short Term Visa

The short term student visa is for students who are studying for short periods of time at a Tier 4 institution.
