LBS Essay 1: What are your post-MBA plans and how will your past experience and the London Business School programme contribute? (500 words)
My work in the field of development, specifically in development consulting, has been a mixed bag. At one level, the learning has been immense as the exposure to the grass-roots has given me a holistic perspective of the challenges facing low-income communities. On the other hand, I have been intrigued by the idiosyncrasies of different development strategies. My work till date has been in the area of financial inclusion and I firmly believe that for meaningful social impact, financial inclusion is a must. However, the challenges at the bottom of the pyramid transcend multiple dimensions. If after several years of work in financial inclusion, close to 40% of the world’s adult population continues to lack access to basic financial services, then we are probably not getting the development paradigm right. It is this search that brings me to the next stage of my professional evolution and growth.
With my exposure in aid driven development projects, I am convinced that philanthropy can have limited impact in fostering sustainable development. I believe that localized innovations will help us to extend the frontiers – rather than a one size fits all strategy. However, we need to find these innovations, fund them, nurture them and build commercially viable models. The impact arena space will usher the next wave of poverty reduction efforts and that is where my career goal lies.
In next 5-7 years, I want to attain technical skills, practical exposure and professional networks that enables me to join an early-stage impact investment fund as an investment manager. I want to leverage my operational and consulting experience in the development space to conceptualize and execute more focused, and indeed disruptive social investments. I am particularly excited about investment opportunities in businesses that leverage technology to address issues related to governance, financial inclusion or climate change.
My long term career aspiration is to become a partner in a large impact investment fund or become an angel investor addressing contemporary developmental issues. Inspired by AMUL (cooperative movement that led India to become world’s largest producer of milk), I dream of many such bottom up and market driven solutions that bring significant social dividends.
A degree from an acclaimed institution such as LBS will give me the required platform to realize my potential. Having worked in multi-cultural work environments, I look forward to contribute and enrich my perspective by being part of one of the most diverse and competent academic cohort. I am also excited about the range of functional and domain specific electives offered at
LBS for which will help me in building a robust technical foundation for my intended career. Also, I want to closely associate with Private Equity and Venture Capital club to get exposure to best practices in the mainstream investment industry. Lastly, located in the oldest financial centres of the world, LBS provides me opportunity to build necessary professional network with the global investment community.
LBS Essay 2: What specific areas of London Business School life are you most excited about getting involved in and where will you add value? (300 words)
Apart from having a world class academic curriculum, LBS offers a fascinating social life for its stakeholders – not just at the campus but also in the larger LBS community. The numerous professional and social clubs touch almost every aspect of personal and professional development of the students. I look forward to being a part of such diverse ecosystem for a comprehensive experience and holistic personality development. With my background, I am specifically looking to play an executive role in the Impact Consulting and Emerging Markets club.
Another aspect of LBS life that particularly excites me is an extensive international exchange. Given my interests in technology start-ups, I would like to use such a platform to build networks in major technology innovation hubs across the world.
While I have a lot to gain from the LBS experience including an unparalleled peer group, I do believe that my experience of working with some of the most under privileged communities will enable me enrich the academic and professional discourse in the LBS community. Moreover, my work has been in the field of digital financial services, a discipline which is fast evolving and is likely to re-define the delivery of financial services, specifically to the low income communities. I want to leverage my technical expertise and professional network to institutionalize the knowledge dissemination (may be interest group, club, events, newsletters, blogs) on digital financial services for the LBS community. I envisage a digital financial services platform that will help the LBS community to be in touch with the latest developments in the digital financial inclusion landscape and to scope opportunities for engagement with the practitioners in the industry.
