Please introduce yourself to your new classmates, including relevant information about your personal and professional life.

Write an essay (250 words)

Hi, I’m ABC and I come from France, Malaysia and India. I’m here to expand my horizons, meet some very smart people, learn about and improve myself, and hopefully forge lifelong friendships.

From being the first non-white in my classroom in France and experiencing racism firsthand, to almost becoming a Parisian chef, but fortunately listening to my elders’ advice and using my inherent number skills to study actuarial science, possibly the university’s toughest course at the time evidenced by students’ receding hairlines, to working in a variety of finance-focused sectors, it’s been quite an enriching journey.

Coming from a family of doctors, I’ve spent significant time in HIV-stricken hospitals, prompting me to assist in the building of a rural HIV clinic. I’ve also gained immense personal satisfaction from voluntarily teaching sports such as cricket and soccer as I understand their role in uniting people from diverse backgrounds.

I aim to pursue a career in Investment Management, eventually opening my own consulting firm in Malaysia. Inspired by the industry’s fiduciary mindset, I undertook extensive work in the retirement-savings structures space in Malaysia to reduce the astronomical fees paid by pensioners, and I plan to financially engineer cost-effective retirement-savings products with capital guarantee structures.

I’m confident, hardworking, ambitious, and have an analytical approach towards life. I consider myself fortunate to have the opportunity to interact with you during the Texas MBA program and learn from your experiences, emerging a more well-rounded leader set to achieve my goals.

Texas McCombs Essay 2: The McCombs School of Business is where leadership is earned. We have an inclusive environment where our dynamic and driven students take an active role in the Texas MBA community. Please discuss why the Texas MBA is the ideal program for you, what you hope to achieve, and how you will contribute to your classmates’ experience. (500 words)

Why the Texas MBA? A pertinent question, the answer to which begins with the recounting of my visit to Austin 2 years ago when I flew in to attend an event here. Grabbing a quick coffee at Mozart’s, I bumped into a few Texas MBA students whose infectious enthusiasm for learning and appreciation for the school inspired me to be in their place in the near future.

After much self-reflection and deliberation, I feel that, given my diverse experiences and my future goals, now is the right time for me to pursue an MBA, and McCombs is where I’d like to do it. While the school holds sentimental value for me, my decision is based on rational factors based on significant long-term interactions with students and a thorough review of the course, and its fit with my profile and goals.

My experiences of relocating, to Malaysia during childhood, and to France more recently, has been a great learning curve, imbibing in me an appreciation for diverse cultures and personalities.

The school’s values resonate with mine along the strong emphasis placed on leadership and the programs designed at addressing social challenges, an aspect that’s become a norm in my life through my own contributions to addressing the social imbalance seen in an emerging economy such as Malaysia.

Given my previous experiences in building a rural HIV clinic and voluntarily teaching sports, I look forward to joining the MBA Healthcare Association and MBA Soccer club. The uniqueness of the MBA+ program in providing a platform for students to apply their learnings in a dedicated structure seems particularly appealing as does the MBA Investment fund offering given my current work experience of portfolio management.

Apart from the technical knowledge I have gained over the years, through my actuarial and CFA studies and my diverse professional experience, including working hands-on with a start-up, I bring with me an ability to easily mix with my peers, a quality attained through my childhood upbringing, and one that I believe will allow me to contribute positively to the experience of my prospective classmates.

As a result of challenges I’ve faced, I’ve taken keen interest in understanding human behavior, so much so that it was a key factor in me obtaining my Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) qualification due to its strong emphasis on behavioural finance, an area that is the established expertise of Professors Ehud Ronn and Alok Kumar, who I look forward to learning from.
In order to achieve my goals, I need to learn the modalities of running a global business. The McCombs curriculum will give me exposure to core business principles and functions, and nuances of entrepreneurship, along with providing me with an invaluable global network of peers and alumni from diverse educational, cultural and professional backgrounds.

I strongly believe that the Texas MBA is the right next step in my career, and I look forward to contributing to the school and my peers’ experience.
